Paint Sample Pro Tips

Have you ever thought you found the perfect paint color in a store only to find it looks completely different in your home? Paint colors can act like a chameleon depending on several factors, so we recommend the following tips:

  • Gather a range of samples in the same color family

  • Paint large swatches (at least 1x1 foot) directly on the wall

  • If testing on poster board, lean it against the wall to avoid color distortion caused by the tape’s shadow

  • Test on multiple walls (or in different rooms if applicable)

  • Check swatches at various times of day and with the lighting you plan to use in the room

  • Allow at least 24 hours for the paint to dry to see the true color

Elusive Undertones

You’ve decided on the color - the rest is easy, right?

Not so fast...Every shade has undertones that can influence how it looks in your space. For example, a white might have pink, yellow, or gray undertones. Understanding these undertones helps ensure the color works well with the room’s other elements. The best way to detect the undertones is to place the test swatches next to a true neutral such as pure white or gray.

The Psychology of Color

Did you know that colors can evoke different moods? The colors used in a particular room can affect the whole vibe of the space. For example, green can promote focus and concentration, making it ideal for home offices. Blue is known to reduce stress, so it’s often used in bedrooms or bathrooms. Yellow is an uplifting color often associated with happiness. Bright yellows can be overstimulating, and therefore not ideal for a bedroom. Yellow is best used in kitchens or playrooms.

Though choosing the perfect paint color can be challenging, understanding the factors at play will help you make a decision that feels right and brings lasting beauty to your space.
