Designing with Pets
We love getting to know our clients…and if they happen to have pets, it’s always an added bonus! As animal lovers, we know that our furry friends shouldn’t be overlooked when designing a home, so we need to be practical without sacrificing style.
Owners are so passionate about their four-legged friends that including designated areas for pets has now become a design trend. “Barkitecture” includes enhancements such as high-tech doggy doors, feeding stations, and pet wash stations. If these options are not feasible for your home, you can make your pet feel special in other ways. In fact, we’ve been designing the cutest pet beds using dog-centric fabric trims from Samuel & Sons*.
While these ideas are fun, it’s also important to consider furnishings that will hold up to wear and tear. Luckily, we are no longer limited in our high-performance options. Even high-end companies now offer fabrics with an emphasis on durability. Crypton fabrics are easy to clean, repel liquids, can withstand heavy use, and have built-in microbial protection. Additionally, brands like Sunbrella and Perennials, known for weather and stain-resistant outdoor fabrics, now carry lines of luxe indoor upholstery. You’d never know we designed the gorgeous chair featured on the bottom right with Sunbrella fabric!
Like upholstery, area rugs also have come a long way. Designer rug lines now carry pet and family-friendly pieces that are as pretty as they are practical. Synthetic fibers such as polypropylene and nylon are excellent choices and are easier to care for than natural fibers such as wool, jute, or sisal. Low-pile rugs are ideal for pet owners because they trap less dirt and pet hair, making them easier to clean. Flatweave rugs also work well because they have no pile, so they can be shaken out or vacuumed easily. Also, avoid rugs with hooks that can get caught on claws.
Whether you have, pets, kids, or any other specific design needs, we can help you make smart decisions for your home. Contact us and together we can create a harmonious living environment for all members of your household, including the furry ones!
